Stow Away Short Story

I joined in a short story competition called ‘Sky’s the Limit’. The writing challenge was that the entire story had to take place in the air. For weeks, I couldn’t think of anything exciting enough to remain in flight from start to finish. I brainstormed ideas, but they all fell flat.

The day before the contest was to end, and I had all but given up hope of submitting an entry, I pictured the air ship from movie ‘The Golden Compass’ and the pirate ship lifted by the huge handmade balloon in ‘The Adventures of Baron Munchausen’ (if anyone remembers that), one of my favorite movies as a child.

With that vision in mind, I sat down and began to write. A story formed. Not one I would expect to win any awards, but I was just happy to be writing and to complete it in time to submit.
