The Package Poem

Home » Blog » The Package Poem

I’m participating in NaPoWriMo (National Poetry Writing Month), writing a poem a day for the month of April and posting it here on my blog to share. Go to NaPoWriMo.net for more details and to view many more participating poets. I did not follow prompts, but decided to share some laughs with the world. Each poem this month is silly, goofy, or fun just to bring you a smile and a little joy, which we can all use more of.

The Package

A package came for Mom
I don’t know who it’s from
She set it there
Without a care
Oh, open the package, please Mom!

What wonders could be within?
A dragons egg, genie or djinn?
Fantastic new game?
Cookies, ice cream?
A puppy, a bear, or a pig?

It sits there unmoving, that box
Uneventful, unspecial, forgot
No markings or prints
Not a hint
Will I know if I stare long enough?

Perhaps I can open a bit?
Take a peek, just real quick
I may faint for not knowing
I’m growing old, is it showing?
Feeling life sliding by as I sit

Oh, pretty please, open the box!
I promise I won’t die of shock
But I may die of waiting, I fear
What could it hold?
Treasures of gold?
A long lost king’s crown lined with jewels?
Toys made for building, painting, or puzzles?
A beast with a fierce, frightening muzzle?
Melt in your mouth delicious sweets?
Precious stones, crumbling treats?

I must know what that box contains
I swear I’m not overreacting
I’m dying inside
Can’t feel my left side..
Mother just left for the store
I’m done for
